As part of proposed new laws, workers in Colombia will be entitled to two days of paid vacation if their pet dies.

The new law attempts to recognize the sentimental relationship that exists between humans and their domestic dogs, whose deaths can have a ‘significant emotional impact’ on their owners.

The campaign is led by Colombian Liberal Party politician Alejandro Carlos Chacon, who has proposed a bill that would require companies to provide two days of paid leave if a member of staff is grieving the death of a pet.

He claimed that “some people do not have children but they do have a much-loved pet with which they develop a deep brotherly bond.”

He also stated that the humanitarian reform would help individuals overcome their sadness and pain of losing these precious creatures without being obsessed with their employment, adding that the new law would apply to the majority of Colombian families, as six out of ten citizens currently own a pet
