More than €1.6 million has been raised for the Maltese children’s cancer charity Puttinu Cares.

A total sum of €1,688,209 was raised thanks to fundraising and donations from those taking part in a 60-hour football and volleyball marathon in aid of the charity.

The President of Malta George Vella kicked off the event at the Marsa Sports Ground on Friday.

Organisers thanked everyone for their support over the three days.

They said that the money raised would be used to buy property in central London for the use of the families of Maltese patients undergoing specialist treatment and chemotherapy in the British capital.

As well as football and volleyball, this year’s event included a free concert by Maltese singers and a charity bike ride to Gozo.

Puttinu Cares has been providing support and financial subsistence to patients and their relatives since 2002.

It spends around €500,000 a year to cover travel and living costs for families whose loved ones are receiving treatment in London.

The marathon also benefitted from €10,000 donated by the family of Enrica Rose.

The 13-year-old girl tragically died of cancer last week.
