London is set to be hotter than Malta this weekend, according to the weather experts.

Temperatures in the south-east of England are likely to reach a sizzling 33°C over the coming days.

In Malta, the Met Office in Luqa said the mercury is expected to hit 32°C on Saturday, and 31°C on Sunday and Monday.

Forecasters said the Maltese Islands would experience glorious sunshine and warm temperatures next week, despite alarmist reports of stormy weather on amateur Facebook pages.

The news came as Brits were warned to stay out of the sun ahead of the heatwave.

The UK Met Office issued a level three alert – the second highest – for the east of England, where temperatures are forecast to reach high levels between 9am on Saturday and 9am on Monday.

Forecaster Alex Deakin said: ‘The East Midlands and the east and south-east of England will see the highest temperatures this weekend.

‘We could get close to 33°C by Bank Holiday Monday, breaking records for this time of year.’

The previous record for the UK’s hottest August bank holiday weekend was set in 2001, when temperatures hit 31.5°C at London’s Heathrow Airport.

Mark Tanzer from the Association of British Travel Agents said: ‘The Mediterranean is currently experiencing some pleasant temperatures for people wishing to travel overseas.

‘But those staying in the UK will be able to enjoy more settled conditions with trips to the coast a popular choice.’

Meanwhile, Public Heath England issued advice on how to cope in the hot weather.

It urged people to:

  • Stay out of the sun
  • Keep your home as cool as possible – shading and shutting windows during the day
  • Only open windows when it is cooler at night
  • Keep drinking fluids
  • Make sure older friends and family members, and those who might be at risk, know what to do
