According to a new survey conducted by leading research
company Esprimi, the vast majority of the public is using the internet
primarily for Social Media platforms.

The research results provide the details, among others, of
the online behaviour of a wide cross-section of Malta’s different demographics.

Whilst as one might expect 94.5% of young audiences aged
between 16 and 24 are mostly engaged in using Social Media, the older cohorts
seem to follow suit, with significant downward shifts in usage figures
happening amongst respondents aged 55+.

The research results provide the details, among others, of
the online behaviour of a wide cross-section of Malta’s different demographics.

The differences between the younger cohorts and the rest
emerges particularly in terms of time spent online and frequency of use within
a given day.

Whilst 57% of youngsters are spending 4 or more hours online
during a typical weekday, the older age groups indicate that they were most
likely to spend 1-3 hours online during the week.

Delving into the social media platform of choice, Facebook
came out on top. More than 45% of young people interviewed declared they check
their profile more than 10 times a day, and 62% of people aged 35+ stating they
check it once a day or more.

Amongst younger age groups, Instagram was the second
preferred social media platform with 24% of respondents aged 16-24 indicating
they check it more than 10 times a day, followed by YouTube with 19% of the
same audience claiming they access it more than 10 times a day.

Youtube was ranked second favourite social media platform
amongst respondents aged over 35, with 29% declaring they check it at least
once a day, whilst usage of other social media platforms by older cohorts was
close to none.

This data is taken from the new Esprimi Media Insights
survey which gives an unprecedented snapshot of the mediatic landscape of the
country, covering online consumption as well as TV, radio and print.

Esprimi Research Director Vanessa Bajada noted how this new
tool provides digital marketers with a wealth of information on the behaviour
of their specific audiences, which can be detailed down to the demographics,
gender, socioeconomic background and geography of a specific group they may
wish to choose to focus on.

Media Insights gathers an abundance of data on local media
consumption that can be examined and filtered according to any specific
requirements. It helps marketing professionals pin-point exactly where to put
their money, to reach their target audience and achieve the best results. The
data gathered covers Maltese TV, print, radio and online platforms.
