Donald Trump has said he has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

The US president told reporters he was nominated by Japan’s prime minister for his work opening dialogue with North Korea.

At a White House event to discuss the proposed Mexico border wall, Mr Trump said Shinzo Abe ‘gave me the most beautiful copy of a letter that he sent to the people who give out a thing called the Nobel Prize’.

‘He told me ‘I have nominated you, respectfully, on behalf of Japan. I am asking them to give you the Nobel Peace Prize.”

South Korean president Moon Jae-in, who previously praised Mr Trump for starting negotiations with North Korea, has also reportedly endorsed him for the prize.

Mr Trump added: ‘I’ll probably never get it, but that’s OK. They gave it to Obama. He didn’t even know what he got it for.’

In 2009, Barack Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize for leading the US commitment to ‘seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons’.

This year, there are 304 candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize, out of which 219 are individuals and 85 are organizations.

The deadline for submissions was January 31.

The Japanese government in Tokyo has refused to comment.
