PD’s proposal to give life to Gozo’s economy

Press Release issued by Partit Demokratiku

Partit
Demokratiku’s vision is very different from government’s “tunnel vision” by
which they are presenting the permanent link as the solution to all of Gozo’s
problems. PD is of the opinion that the solution lies in radically improving
the connectivity between the two islands, but not by means of a permanent link.

“Any
transport system for Malta has to address our land policy, which has its
limitations because of Malta’s size, and for it to be customer friendly, travel
reliability, travel time and affordability have to be guaranteed,” stated MEP
candidate Camilla Appelgren.

A
tunnel would improve connectivity but has so many downsides that in PD’s
opinion it will sign the death knell of Gozo as we know it, not to mention the
severe environmental impact both during execution as well as in operation.

A
fast ferry passenger service connecting Mgarr Gozo, St Paul’s Bay, Sliema,
Valletta and Kalkara with dedicated connections via an ACES service (automated,
connected, electrical, chaired) towards Bugibba, St Julian’s and Smart City is
the realistic solution. This will reduce travel time, compared to present, by
at least 50% by reducing road travel. This demands an overhaul of the Gozo
Channel service to render it more responsive to market needs.

“Increasing
the ferry fleet, scheduling strategic coastline stops, linking it to a Bus
Rapid Transport (BRT) and providing a consumers’ based commodity service will
surely pave the way forward,” stated MEP candidate Martin Cauchi Inglott.

PD
is for a level playing field of opportunities for Gozitans and Maltese
alike.  We have to invigorate the Gozitan economy by safeguarding and
enhancing the many positives that Gozo possesses.

Proposta
tal-PD biex nagħtu ħajja lill-ekonomija Għawdxija

Il-viżjoni
tal-Partit Demokratiku hija bil-wisq differenti mill-viżjoni ta’ fondoq
tal-gvern li qed jippreżenta l-proġett tal-mina bħala s-soluzzjoni
għall-problemi kollha ta’ Għawdex. Il-PD hu tal-opinjoni li s-soluzzjoni tinsab
billi ntejbu radikalment il-konnettività bejn iż-żewġ gżejjer, imma mhux
b’mina.

“Kwalunkwe
sistema ta’ trasport għal Malta għandu jindirizza l-policy tal-art, li għandha
l-limitazzjonijiet tagħha minħabba ċ-ċokon ta’ pajjiżna, u biex tkun favur
il-klijent, trid toffri servizz affidabbli, b’ħin tal-ivvjaġġar raġunat u bi
prezz li jilħqu kulħadd ,” stqarret il-kandidata għall-Ewropa Camilla
Appelgren.

Mina
ttejjeb il-konnettività, imma tant hemm żvantaggi li, fl-opinjoni tagħna, tkun
tfisser il-mewt ta’ Għawdex kif nafuh, biex ma nsemmux l-impatt qawwi
ambjentali sew waqt it-tħaffir u wara li jitlesta.

Servizz
express għall-passiġġieri li jgħaqqad l-Imġarr Għawdex ma’ San Pawl il-Baħar,
tas-Sliema, il-Belt, u l-Kalkara, b’konnessjoni bis-servizz ACES (automated,
connected, electrical, chaired) lejn Buġibba, San Ġiljan u Smart City hi
soluzzjoni realistika. Dan inaqqas il-ħin tal-ivvjaġġar bin-nofs billi jiġi
eleminat il-vjaġġ tat-triq. Din is-soluzzjoni għandha bżonn tibdil radikali
fis-servizz tal-Gozo Channel biex tagħti aktar kas tal-bżonnijiet
tal-passiegiera.

“Il-mira
tagħna għandha tkun li nżidu l-vapuri, nagħmlu waqfiet strateġiċi mal-kosta,
noħolqu Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) u nipprovdu kumdità għall-konsumaturi,”
stqarr il-kandidat għall-Ewropa Martin Cauchi Inglott.

Il-PD
jemmen li jrid ikollna opportunitajiet indaqs għall-Għawdxin u l-Maltin. Irridu
nagħtu ħajja lill-ekonomija Għawdxija billi nħarsu u ntejbu l-ħafna tajjeb li
għandu Għawdex.
